But a month after I lost the pregnancy, I returned to Nigeria with my family for the first time since my parents left in 1997. On our way back to the airport in Lagos after a week of finally seeing how and where my parents grew up and loving on my family, in the dark hours of the early morning, I saw a crowd of heads in a bus driving in front of us. Something about seeing their backs driving off into a new day moved me. I drew the image in my journal and a child appeared. So, I tried to paint them to life. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e7aa6f283756d18092d1820/a4ceab6b-d0e5-4373-b494-880dbbfb788d/IMG_3612.jpg Diaspora Eyes - Things they don’t tell you about miscarriage in the 2nd trimester https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e7aa6f283756d18092d1820/1791493619722-EGL90RYYCFVMK2PG9ERG/IMG_3625.jpg Diaspora Eyes - Things they don’t tell you about miscarriage in the 2nd trimester https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e7aa6f283756d18092d1820/200086e4-1c66-47b4-bdda-d1a44f2dcbd4/IMG_3462.jpg Diaspora Eyes - Things they don’t tell you about miscarriage in the 2nd trimester Pauline Tea Bar, 2024 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e7aa6f283756d18092d1820/fd6c5541-34aa-4c64-a823-6c2290220dcd/IMG_3604.jpg Diaspora Eyes - Things they don’t tell you about miscarriage in the 2nd trimester Isle of Palms, South Carolina 2024 After my first miscarriage, my dad shared a Yoruba proverb with me: “Omi lò dánù, àgbè ò fọ́,” which translates to “The water has spilled, but the gourd (or pot) did not break.” In her essay, “The Site of Memory,” Toni Morrison wrote that “All water has perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.” So, a few days after we lost the baby, my husband and I drove down to the ocean. I cried, I picked up shells, I wrote a letter to the baby we lost. I honor her today and every day. And I thank her for making me a mother when she did. https://folaonifade.com/diasporaeyes/postpartum-diaries-4th-trimester-and-mother-time monthly 0.5 2026-09-14 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e7aa6f283756d18092d1820/49c08937-b913-41c2-9619-33e288c3065c/PP+blog+1.png Diaspora Eyes - Postpartum Diaries - 4th Trimester and Mother Time - Make it stand out Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. https://folaonifade.com/diasporaeyes/persist monthly 0.5 2023-03-08 https://folaonifade.com/diasporaeyes/and-tomorrow monthly 0.5 2023-02-09 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e7aa6f283756d18092d1820/508c3638-6a3e-4991-a684-3cc533eb59e7/IMG_2183.jpg Diaspora Eyes - Chaos & Order - Make it stand out Haleiwa, Oahu.
